debt consolidator question by USMCWife<3: Help.. Marrying INTO bad credit..?
My brother and his fiancee got engaged a few weeks ago, and he’s recently confided in me his concern about her credit. She is a good person, but apparently has something like 8 delinquent accounts, and under $ 4,000 in debt. He’s always known about her debt issues, but it had never been a problem until they went to get their first apartment together. They where DENIED based on her credit. They could still get it because he just put it in his name.. but his concern is when they go to buy a house.

I’m not concerned about the amount of debt, they’re graduating next year and when she gets a “real” job she can work towards paying it off, but what affect will this have on her credit score for the next few years? Would it be better to get this paid off all at once? Or make monthly payments? They spoke to a “debt consolidator”, but they couldn’t help her because she had less than $ 5,000.
Does anyone have any advice? I would love to see her get this straightened out, as my brother has immaculate credit and I would hate to see HIS score go down because he marries into HERS..

The best thing he can do is to make sure all finances are kept separate. Do not put her name on his checking account or savings account, do not apply for credit jointly, and do not get any credit cards jointly until her debt is paid off in full. If they can do it, it would be better to go ahead and just pay everything off instead of making payments.

I read several books on dealing with creditors but this program was by far the best! I was being harassed by creditor calls but the information and forms helped me stop the calls. Unlike the others, this book tells you how the creditors think, what steps they will take and how much time you have before they act. That information, plus the sample letters and guide on which bills to pay first helped me avoid legal action and reduce my debt by over $4,000 at the same time.
