debt and you question by Josh: Help You Out of Debt Services – Real or Fake?
My financial life has been very unstable for the past 6 months thus a lot of my credit card bills have been piling on and collecting a lot of late fees, over-limit fees and etc. Then on top of everything I just recently lost my job.

I’ve heard those “Call now, and get out of debt and save thousands of dollars!” on the radio very often, are those legit? Because I’ve heard a lot of bad stories about them – is there a way to do it all myself and what are my options?

Please help!

Don’t trust any of them unless you know somebody that used them before. I heard they are a scam and don’t even pay your bills on time.

The Better Business Bureau has yet to certify even one of those Credit Repair Companies. Not one of the for profit companies has a track record of fixing even one single persons credit. Don’t believe me check at http://www.bbb.com

A couple of years ago we got into a “get out of debt program” for us we thought it would “solve” our debt problem.. What they do is set up a “trust account” which you pay into monthly and you “lapse” on your credit cards.. The credit cards eventually settle for hopefully LESS than what you owe. In as little as 18 months! It sounds pretty good and for us since we have a hard time saving money it seemed like a good option.. The first credit card settled without incident… We had two more hanging in the balance. The second proved to be more difficult. They ended up suing us and eventually settling for about what we owed. Which was fine BUT, the settlement service did absolutely NOTHING to help us.. So, we pulled out the program and we’ve decided the settle them ourself.. Since the settlement company is in the business of making money it would be better for them if you/card settled for MORE when in fact you can settle for LESS without using them…. So, if you can start putting money into a savings account and eventually the companies will take you to court.. It’s more of a mtg. than an actual court and you can settle with the company yourself and forget the middle-man approach.. DO NOT DEFAULT- make some attempt to settle the debt.. Drag it out in court for as long as you can DO NOT ignore it… OR the creditors can have access to your bank account especially if you ever had “automatic payments” and DRAIN your account and garnish your wages… My sister is an attorney and deals mainly with credit settlements and bankruptcy(sp)… she said that’s the absolute worst thing you can do is to ignore the situation… So, call them and try to get your interest rates reduced and eliminate any over-limit/late charges. Check with your local bank or lenders and even credit unions and see if you can take out a personal loan to pay off the cards.. See what you owe vs. what you can take out and start negotiating…

    Good luck

    * We also had a friend that “joined” another settlement company and he put in 2k of money into a trust account which was mis-managed and eventually the BBB and Attorney General are investing his funds are frozen until further notice.. He may NOT get anything back. So, if you do plan on using a credit service check it out with the BBB/Attorney General etc…

    Good luck

There are a lot of companies out there that offer debt counseling and/or debt consolidation. Some of these companies offer their services for free, but most charge a fee. I can only tell you about my personal experience and explain how it worked for me. I use a debt consolidation company called American Consumer Credit Counseling (ACCC). I had about $ 8000 spread over 3 cards all with late fees and over the limit fees stacking up. I called ACCC and they put me on their debt management program. They contact each credit card company to lower your interest rates and set up a payment plan. For example, one of my cards had a 21% APR, they were able to lower my interest rate to 8%. They also set up a monthly payment schedule based on my income and how much debt I had. I now pay 189$ per month to ACCC and they send the payments to the credit card companies. It’s very easy because it’s an electronic deduction from your bank account, it happens on the same day every month, it is always the same amount of money and I don’t have to deal with the credit card companies at all. As soon as I was enrolled in the debt program, all the creditors stopped calling me too which was very nice, and all my accounts were listed as “current” and no longer past due on my credit report. I have heard that there are some companies out there that can do this kind of thing for you for free, but I know ACCC charges a $ 3 fee per card per month. In my opinion, it’s totally worth it. You can also call your credit card companies yourself and try to bargain with them to lower interest rates or payments, but for me, going with a debt management program was the way to go. Oh, and being in a debt management program doesnt hurt your credit score, although you cant use your cards once they are in the program and you cant open any new card accounts until your debt is paid off. I hope this helps you, and good luck. I know how terrible and frustrating it is to be in your situation. There is hope though!
