debt relief question by HannaBeth: “Fast Track Debt Relief”?
I want to sign up with a company called Fast Track Debt Relief that will call my creditors and negotiate a settlement. I know on your credit report something saying “Settled for less than full balance” is bad. My current credit score is 628, with almost $ 17,000 in credit card debt. Should I sign with this debt company, so that I can be out of debt in 3 years, instead of the 15 years it would take me to pay my 6 credit cards off on my own?

Please google this company first.
type the name of the company with the words
complaints
rip-off
scam
Make sure the company has been in business for at least 1 year.

Some of these companies tell you to stop paying your creditors. The thinking is that the credit companies will get nervous and settle. The truth is that some companies just send you to collections or court.
I’ve heard countless complaints about how people give these companies money, and they essentially do nothing in return.

Be careful – everyone here says you are better off trying to do this yourself. Call your creditors again, and keep trying to settle – make all your minimums.

Like the first book in the series, this is a great book for anyone starting out in their financial life. I am not a beginner yet found this an engaging read and a great reminder of positive habits to keep throughout life. Most finance books are dry, condescending and somewhat remote from daily challenges yet this book is much different. The conversational style made the material easy to understand and much more enjoyable to read. I intend to read this once a year to make sure I am on track with smart savings and hopefully many beginners will do the same.

I wouldn’t say there were lots of new advices, (I’m 48, and had a real big mortgage in 2008 :-D), but the whole book was very interesting, amusing and well written. For me, being hungarian, it had the bonus to learn how lots of things (saving for retirement, buying a house etc.) happen in the USA.

Or, too much chaff in with the wheat.

The advice in this book is spot-on. I think it’s the first personal finance book I’ve completely agreed with, that lines up with everything I both practice and preach. I highly recommend the *advice* in this book to everyone. Thing is, it could have been presented in one quarter of the space. What’s with the annoying conversations? Most of which add nothing to the advice. I guess the author thinks they’re clever? Sorry, they’re not. They’re beyond annoying, and they get in the way of the good advice in the book. Dude, did you really need ten pages of “clever” (not!) banter to say, “Pay yourself first?” I’m afraid too much of your good advice will be lost by people fast-forwarding through the drivel. I could also have done without the endless stories about your kids. They’re not as cute to us as they are to you.
